Yadiel Hernandez has been released by the Nationals 10 games into the Triple-A season, per the team’s transaction log.

Hernandez, 35, posted a .205 batting average (8-for-39) and a 16 wRC+, striking out at a clip of 37.5 percent. It ends a seven-year stint for Hernandez with the Nats’ organization.

At 28, Hernandez defected from Cuba and signed with the Nationals in 2016 once he was eligible to. He spent four years across Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester, posting a monster year for the Red Wings in 2019 but wasn’t able to crack a spot on the big-league roster.

The outfielder was called up and played 12 games for the Nats in 2020, and played in 218 games across his three big-league seasons, and his hitting also had a flare for the dramatic as his first home run ever was a walk-off and four home runs after that was another walk-off.

Unfortunately, injuries derailed much of what he could have contributed. He might hold the Nats’ record for some time with a walk-off home run per per every 9.5 homers. He hit .267 with 19 homers and a 98 wRC+ through his three seasons. However, he did not make Washington’s Opening Day roster in 2023, and is now a free agent.

“I said that my goal is to make the Nationals the envy of sport.”

“To me, that means an organization defined by our relentless pursuit of excellence, strengthened by our connection to each other and fueled by our positive energy. As a result, we become an organization that players and staff are itching to join because they know it’s where they will develop and thrive most; a place that energizes our loyal fans and attracts new ones, and where success is achieved – and sustained – over time.”
