The Washington Nationals made a few roster moves afted yesterday’s finale in Miami and before Monday night’s game in Toronto.

The Washington Nationals announced they selected the contract of Drew Millas, optioned OF Blake Rutherford, and placed RHP Carl Edwards Jr. on the 60-day IL. Millas made his debut tonight as a pinch-hitter.

Millas, 25, was acquired from the Oakland Athletics at the 2021 trade deadline when the Nationals traded Yan Gomes to Oakland. The catcher started this season in Double-A Harrisburg before being promoted to Triple-A on May 23rd.

He recorded 15 doubles, three triples, and seven homers, totaling 43 RBIs and 40 runs in 83 games. Millas entered pro ball when he was selected in the seventh round of the 2019 first-year player draft out of Missouri State University. He had played 257 professional games, slashing .260/.368/.378.

Millas had an opportunity tonight in the top of the ninth in tonight’s game, and had a six-pitch at-bat, eventually grounding out.

“For me, it’s a lot easier to do now because he’s here, and we have a third catcher,” Martinez spoke on adding a third catcher. “But Millas is also a really good athlete. He can do a lot of different things here for us… He’s going to get a chance to do some different things.”

At the beginning of the year, Millas debuted as the 25th prospect in the Nationals system. With the move, the Nationals will be carrying three catchers, with Kiebert Ruiz and Riley Adams.

Meanwhile, Edwards suffered a shoulder injury earlier in the summer and was placed on the injured list on June 21st. However, Edwards has not recovered and may not pitch for the Nationals again this season.
