When the Washington Nationals needed a gem from a starter, Cade Cavalli delivered with 0-earnies en route to an 8-1 win to end Boston’s 5-game winning streak. The bats came alive in the 7th inning for Washington as they put up seven runs between the 7th and 8th innings. This was a total team win to get the Nats back to 1-game over .500
Cavalli is the first Nationals pitcher to pitch 7.0 innings, record double-digit strikeouts and allow one hit or less since Max Scherzer on April 14, 2018 vs. Colorado (7.0 IP, 1 H, 10 SO). Cavalli’s 13 strikeouts were the most K’s for a Nats pitcher since 2021.
There was major drama in the game as Willson Contreras started a benches clearing scuffle after his strikeout.
Contreras was ejected plus another Red Sox player, and Miles Mikolas was ejected from the Nationals side.
“Cade is very competitive and wants to win and got caught up in the moment.”
— manager Blake Butera said after the game on the scuffle
Name your offensive star in this one. Keibert Ruiz went 2-3 for 3 RBIs. James Wood went 3-5 with 2 RBIs, Luis Garcia Jr. entered as a pinch-hitter and went 1-3 with 2 RBIs. CJ Abrams had a home run. Daylen Lile was 2-4 and scored 2 runs.
The Nats finish the series with an afternoon finale before Washington flies back to D.C. with a day-off tomorrow. The series is now tied at 1-1.
