With this win, the Washington Nationals are now 2-1 in getaway games since the midway point in the season. That’s a vast improvement over the 1-9 in the previous 10 getaway games. With this series win, the Nats head back to Washington, D.C. on a happy flight with a day-off tomorrow. The Nats also improved their road record to 10 games over .500 at 28-18, and are now 2-games over .500 overall.

This getaway lineup was set to give CJ Abrams a day-off, and that was a positive in this 10-2 drubbing of the Boston Red Sox. With Nasim Nunez taking Abrams’ spot at shortstop, Jorbit Vivas took over at second base and went 0-5 including 0-4 in RISP spots. He was the only Nats player without a hit today. Vivas also lost a pop-up in the sun because he wasn’t wearing sunglasses. To cap off his bad game, Vivas blew the Nats final ABS challenge on a bad decision on a pitch in the zone.

Both Nunez and Andres Chaparro hit homers above the Green Monster in which each got their first home runs of the season. James Wood also hit an oppo home run over the Green Monster. Big games by Dylan Crews and Jacob Young who both tallied two hits and and two walks each. Young’s two hits were both doubles.

The Nats offense tallied 10 walks in the game and that was only behind their 12 walk game on April 21 against the Atlanta Braves. In that game the Nats scored 11 runs, and the Nats should have scored 11 runs today, but Nunez was thrown out at home after he jogged from second base to third base and then didn’t sprint home. Not good in a game where there were a few other instances where two players jogged it out on double play grounders.

Sure, the Nats crushed the Red Sox, but weren’t there lessons learned from that game in San Francisco that the Nats lost after leading by 8-runs? If you are windmilled to run home — YOU RUN HOME!

Both opener Brad Lord, and bulk pitcher Andrew Alvarez combined for 7.0 scoreless innings. Once again, Riley Cornelio gave up runs in a low leverage outing.

The Nats really gave the back of their bullpen a lot of rest this series.

❝Really good pitching and some big hits today.❞

— manager Blake Butera said after the game

By the way, Luis Garcia Jr. entered mid-game in a pinch hitting spot and knocked in two more runs for the 59th RBI of the season. There were many great signs in this series.

The Nats earned their day-off tomorrow leading up to the July 4th weekend series against Pittsburgh.

I said that my goal is to make the Nationals the envy of sport.

To me, that means an organization defined by our relentless pursuit of excellence, strengthened by our connection to each other and fueled by our positive energy. As a result, we become an organization that players and staff are itching to join because they know it’s where they will develop and thrive most; a place that energizes our loyal fans and attracts new ones, and where success is achieved – and sustained – over time.
