The Washington Nationals need a win today. You have to find a way. The pitching was good enough to win when you consider they gave up just four runs, but the bats remained eerily silent and could only score two. The team was once again without both James Wood and CJ Abrams.
There is no help coming from Triple-A where Seaver King and Trey Lipscomb are tearing the cover off the ball — instead, you get Jorbit Vivas and Nasim Nunez and have to wonder, why? In the past month, Vivas has no extra base hits and is batting .176. Nunez, since July 3, has no extra base hits, and is batting .205. People, we have a problem here.
Can the Nats get on a winning streak as there are just 30 games remaining in this regular season. If they don’t, the final results might look very disappointing. To avoid a 100 loss season, the Nats need to win two more games. To avoid a 90 loss season, the Nats need to win 12 more games. And to get to a winning season, the Nats would have to go 21-9 to finish the season.
Maybe the highlight of the game was watching the MLB debut of Erik Tolman. An absolute showing of perseverance. The kid suffered through two TJ surgeries, and a severe knee/leg injury. He got a strikeout and a scoreless frame in his debut. One of the better debuts we’ve seen from Nats pitchers this year.
Speaking of MLB debuts, the Nats pin their hopes today on Jackson Kent who is making his third MLB appearance in his career. Will we see a better version of him today in this pitcher’s park?

On offense, the Nats have the 1st in MLB for the most runs scored this season at 680 runs, and that is an impressive 5.25 runs per game. With the Nats pitching giving up 4.67 earned runs per game, the difference is really those pesky unearned runs due to the errors. Overall, the Nats have a +14 run differential on the season.
The FanGraphs WAR chart is now large in its sample size. You can certainly start to extrapolate the numbers for the full-season. The OAA defense stat is now giving us a picture of what the Nats have — and don’t have.
