WASHINGTON, D.C. — Did you know there was postseason baseball last night at Nationals Park? Yes, the inaugural Banana Bowl championship was played on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 41,000 at Nationals Park.

The highly anticipated finale capped off the blockbuster 2026 Banana Ball Championship League season after 191 games between the six teams in the league to get to the two teams to play in this final game between the Savannah Bananas and the Texas Tailgaters.

The Texas Tailgaters won the inaugural Banana Bowl championship game last night, defeating the Savannah Bananas with a final score of 2-1. Truthfully, the score probably didn’t matter to most.

Because the game finished deadlocked at 1 point apiece after nine innings under the unique Banana Ball scoring format, the title came down to a one-on-one Showdown tiebreaker. Texas infielder Nick Lopez scored the decisive run against Savannah pitcher Danny Hosley, and Tailgaters reliever Chris Clarke struck out the Bananas’ Dan Oberst to seal the victory.

True to Banana Ball tradition, the host city received a special nod that united the local Washington Nationals faithful and this went further as two former-Nats (click on the link for video) would face each other. Loud applause erupted when former Nationals All-Star pitcher Jordan Zimmermann emerged from the Tailgaters’ dugout. Zimmermann threw the first no-hitter in Nats history. The decibel level exploded moments later when Nationals legend Ryan Zimmerman was announced by Cole as a pinch-hitter for the Bananas, waving to the crowd with a signature yellow bat. He made his pro debut when the Savannah Sand Gnats were a Nats’ minor league affiliate back in 2005. Zimmerman flew-out to left field and both exited the field after the short cameo.

There was some other local ties to the Washington Nationals. The player/coach for the Bananas is RobertAnthony Cruz (aka RAC) who was an undrafted free agent by the Nationals in July 2021. His signing turned into a viral moment when he surprised his father with the news. Unfortunately, Cruz’s minor league career lasted only seven games in the Florida Complex League in 2021.

Often compared to the Harlem Globetrotters for its trick plays and independent rulebook, Banana Ball takes entertainment to an entirely different level. The spectacle is a non-stop barrage of choreography, pyrotechnics, acrobatics, and audience participation where even the umpires are part of the act. While the actual baseball game isn’t scripted, the dancing and singing is practiced with a choreographer.

Nation’s Capital Mixes Hollywood, Broadway, and the Grammys Around the Game

While the action on the field kept fans on the edge of their seats, a massive lineup of celebrity cameos and musical acts transformed Nationals Park into the “Greatest Show in Sports.” Throughout the night, team owner Jesse Cole kept the energy electric, broadcasting a constant stream of music and commentary to the packed stadium.

The star-studded evening featured several celebrities listed in chronological order:

  • Pentatonix: The powerhouse acapella group kicked off the night with a stirring rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, synchronized with a trip of F-35 Lightning jets in a flyover that shook the stadium.
  • John Cena: The WWE legend electrified the stadium early, arriving in a military Humvee with a D.C. police motorcycle escort to personally deliver the official game ball.
  • O.A.R.: In a nod to the local DMV area, the Rockville, Maryland natives surprised fans by performing directly from the upper deck stands in left field at Nationals Park. This wasn’t O.A.R.’s first time at Nationals Park.
  • Andy Grammer: Sung “Honey I’m Good” between innings.
  • Kane Brown: The country star returned as a franchise favorite, joining the Texas Tailgaters on the field for a live, choreographed dance routine to his hit track “Miles On It.”
  • Derek Klena: The Broadway star turned Bananas player—who recently starred in a viral video with Hollywood’s Kristen Bell—combined his love for baseball, singing, and dancing by performing an original song between innings.
  • Lindsey Stirling: The acclaimed electronic violinist brought her signature high energy to the grass, performing a breathtaking solo that hyped up the massive crowd.
  • Dancing with the Stars: Cast members from the hit TV show joined the players on the field for an epic mid-game routine, sharing the spotlight with Bananas player Jackson Olson, who is currently competing as a celebrity dancer on the show.
  • The Jonas Brothers: The pop trio stole the spotlight in the ninth inning, bringing the entire stadium to its feet with a high-energy mini-concert.

There are six official teams competing in the Banana Ball Championship League (BBCL).

The complete roster of teams includes:

Even though this championship game featured the Bananas and the Tailgaters, all of the league’s players were present for this game.

With so much happening simultaneously, the event borders on sensory overload, leaving fans to wonder whether they should watch the baseball game or the dugout antics. Ultimately, it is a masterclass in entertainment that appeals to die-hard sports fans and casual observers alike. The full 3:45 spectacle is available to stream on YouTube.

“I said that my goal is to make the Nationals the envy of sport.”

“To me, that means an organization defined by our relentless pursuit of excellence, strengthened by our connection to each other and fueled by our positive energy. As a result, we become an organization that players and staff are itching to join because they know it’s where they will develop and thrive most; a place that energizes our loyal fans and attracts new ones, and where success is achieved – and sustained – over time.”
