LAS VEGAS — The GM Meetings begin today. For some, sitting at the table is old hat. They’ve done it for years. For Paul Toboni, this is his first time with a seat at the table of 30. Technically, the Washington Nationals do not have a general manager. Toboni’s predecessor had the President of Baseball Operations and GM title all in one. Toboni had the greenlight to name a GM, but chose not to at this time. So he will represent the Nats at the main table.

A key note is that the GM Meetings are separate from the Winter Meetings which start on Dec. 8 in Orlando, Florida. Key events during the Winter Meetings include the MLB Draft Lottery on December 9, and the Rule 5 Draft on December 10. Throughout that event, there is usually a big free agent signing and sometimes breaking news on trades. There is also no shortage of rumors that hit social media on free agent signings and trades.

The MLB GM Meetings are an annual event held every November in various cities. Las Vegas, Nevada is the host city this year. This is where the general managers and top baseball executives from all 30 teams gather to discuss league-wide issues, review rules, and lay the groundwork for the upcoming offseason, including trade and free agent discussions. While major deals usually aren’t always finalized during these meetings, they serve as a crucial starting point for the “hot stove” season, creating the foundation for deals that will be made in the following weeks and months. 

Key aspects of the GM Meetings

• Location: The meetings take place in a single location, bringing all 30 GMs and their front office members together in one place and face-to-face.
• Purpose: The primary purpose is for league executives to gather and discuss league-wide issues, game-related rules, and overall strategy.
• Offseason groundwork: They are the unofficial start of the offseason, where executives begin to gauge interest in trades and discuss potential moves before the more public Winter Meetings later in the year. Since many agents are in the hotel complex, free agency is also discussed.
• Networking: The meetings provide a rare opportunity for executives from different teams to meet face-to-face, which can be more effective for initiating serious trade talks than phone or text conversations alone.
• Player agents: While the meetings are for GMs, player agents are also present, and they will meet later in the week to begin formal and informal discussions with the teams.
• Contrast with Winter Meetings: The GM Meetings are more of a working meeting for executives to discuss the state of the game, while the Winter Meetings are where a lot of the major free agent signings and trades move into the final phases.

This year, the meetings will also overlap with the first ever Capital One MLB Open golf tournament. This inaugural event will be played at the highly desired Shadow Creek Country Club on November 12-14, 2025.

The three-day event kicks off with an exciting pro-am, pairing MLB stars – past and present – with amateur players for a one-of-a-kind experience. The main tournament will feature a two-day tournament with a competitive field of current and former MLB players going head-to-head in a field of 60 golfers.

The final field has not been disclosed. Each team is to be represented by two former and/or current players tied to each franchise. Some notable names that have leaked are Jimmy Rollins, John Smoltz, Justin Turner, David Wright, and Tarik Skubal. And Mookie Betts will also be present as an on-course correspondent. 

The Nats have had some great golfers over the years with Craig Stammen who once considered playing golf professionally. He was just named the manager of the San Diego Padres. Often on the links you could find Stammen, Livan Hernandez, Tyler Clippard, Stephen Strasburg, and Ryan Zimmerman. MASN showed golf course footage of several current players playing this year that included MacKenzie Gore and Jake Irvin.

A unique scoring system will turn every hole into a chance for players to climb the leaderboard. This will be a televised event, however it will be shown on replay only on the TNT Network on November 18, at 9:30 p.m. ET.

The event will wrap-up with the MLB Awards show presented by MGM Rewards at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on November 13 for one of baseball’s biggest celebrations of the year. This event will be televised during a live MLB Network show.

The Hank Aaron Award winners, Comeback Players of the Year, Mariano Rivera & Trevor Hoffman Relievers of the Year, Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter of the Year and selections for the All-MLB First and Second Teams will all be announced live this year!
